PD Logistics doubles paper collections in North Lincolnshire

Cheshire Recycling has contracted an outside company to run its kerbside paper collection service in North Lincolnshire.

PD Logistics has been selected by Cheshire Recycling to expand its kerbside collection in North Lincolnshire from a blue bag scheme covering 37,000 households to a blue box system covering 64,000 households. Since beginning the scheme, PD Logistics has seen a rise in collected tonnages of paper from 40 to 85 tonnes per week.

Bob Clarke, managing director of PD Logistics, said: “We are naturally delighted with the way the scheme has been rolled out. As well as achieving a 100% increase in the volume of paper collected, we can also report that we are enjoying increased productivity as our operators become more experienced.”

PD Logistics has invested in new vehicles specifically for the paper collections. The company has bought Mitsubishi Canter vehicles supplied by PD Logistics’ sister company H&L; Garages of Killingholme, North Lincolnshire.

The new vehicles are fitted with satellite tracking technology, designed to ensure that all households are regularly serviced and ensure communication between base and driver in case of changes to the route.

PD Logistics does not have previous experience in kerbside collections, but it has established itself as a shipping company for waste paper to be recycled in the Far East. The company ships up to 150 containers a week of waste paper and is diversifying into plastics and metals.

Ken Andrews, spokesman for the company said: “This is our first venture into kerbside collection but we export waste paper and plastics overseas and are responsible for a number of containers that ship these materials.”

He added that PD Logistics does not intend to provide kerbside collections independently. He said: “Expansion in that area will probably be with Cheshire Recycling. As they win business in various local authorities we hope to provide the vehicles and the manpower.”
