Onyx starts the new contract on October 1 2001 and it will serve 110,000 people in a mainly rural area. Tenders were evaluated according to cost, quality and method of service delivery. East Hampshire said that the duration of the contract period has been extended to give the contractor the ability to plan long term and adjust to developments in recycling technology and practice. The council said it also viewed the appointment of Onyx is a positive step towards achieving the Govrnment's targets on recycling.
Operatives working for the current contractor, SERCO, will be transferred to Onyx.
Commenting on the new contract, Sue Halstead, East Hampshire's environment committee chairman, said, “I am delighted with the outcome of the tendering process. The new contract allows maximum flexibility for the development of more effective ways of collecting waste and recyclable materials”.
Richard Bray, Regional Director of Onyx said, ” We are extremely pleased to have been awarded this contract. It allows the group to fully integrate collection, recycling and recovery activities”.
Onyx is the parent company of Hampshire Waste Services which manages the disposal of the waste collected across the whole of Hampshire. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has also recently awarded its collection to Onyx.
