Oldham firm could be forced to clear 150,000 fridge stock-pile

Britannia Import Export, which aims to recycle fridges in the UK could have to clear 150,000 waste fridges stored on eight of its sites by November 4, if it fails to meet Environment Agency requirements. The warning comes following the serving of a series of legal notices on the company by the Agency.

The Agency said today that if the company, which is based in Oldham, continues to fail to meet requests for “crucial additional information”, it could also face criminal charges, initially amounting to 5,000 in addition to removing the fridges.

An Environment Agency spokesman explained: “Waste fridges can be stored pending licence applications being determined, but only if the application is in order and progressing satisfactorily.”

Area environment protection manager Keith Ashcroft said: “Serving these notices is a first step and the Environment Agency is keeping options open. Whether we enforce them will depend on satisfactory progress being made by Britannia on its licence applications.”
