SITA UK has strengthened its activities in South East England with the acquisition of Essex-based commercial and industrial waste recycling specialist Nordic Recycling.
The deal, which appears to have been completed under the radar earlier this year, sees one the UKs largest remaining independent waste management companies join SITA UK and represents further consolidation in the waste management sector.
Established in 1999, Nordic Recycling was previously owned by Forth Ports Plc and has operations in Chatham in Kent and Tilbury in Essex, serving both London and the South East.
Forth Ports owns the port of Tilbury, the closest port to London, and originally acquired the Nordic Group – comprising a port terminal operation as well as recycling business – for 46 million in 2007.
Nordic Recycling specialises in baling waste materials for export, waste paper and recovered material sales and providing waste services to corporate clients. It operates a materials recycling facility (MRF) at Tilbury which was developed for Holmen Recycle (Paper Mills) and, like SITA UK, is active in the export market for refuse-derived fuel (RDF).On its website, Nordic prides itself on being one of the first to promote a no landfill solution for waste.
There have been links between SITA UK and Nordic Recycling in the past, with former SITA UK commercial director Peter Hathaway appointed as managing director of Nordic in 2009 (see letsrecycle.com story).
