Suez launches wetsuit recycling trial
Suez has partnered with Cornwall council and The Wave Project to launch a wetsuit recycling trial.

Residents will now be able to take damaged and pre-loved wetsuits in household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) in St Erth and Newquay. These items will be cleaned and repaired before being sold at affordable prices at The Wave Project shop on Newquay high street.
Chris Lynn, general manager for Suez recycling and recovery UK in Cornwall said: “Through this collaboration, we are not only helping to reduce waste, but we are also supporting Cornwall’s young people. At SUEZ, as part of our triple bottom line approach, we look for ways our services can enhance the environment and the communities we serve. We are thrilled to have seas-ed the opportunity to work with The Wave Project in their mission to transform lives through surf therapy”.
Scrap steel repurposed for HS2 railway
Celsa Steel has highlighted the use of scrap steel in the construction of HS2, saying that old car parts, radiators and shopping trolleys are all in use.
Celsa explained that over the last two years, the UK steel industry has benefitted from a pipeline of orders worth over £170m from HS2’s construction partners building the first phase of the high-speed railway linking London and the West Midlands.

The company added that over one million tonnes of steel are forecast to be needed for standard construction materials, a further 200,000 tonnes for steel rail, switches and slabtrack, and an additional 15,000 tonnes for rolling stock.
Celsa Steel UK is the UK’s largest manufacturer of steel reinforcement. At its two Cardiff-based recycling sites, recycled scrap metal is melted in an electric arc furnace to “produce 80% less carbon emissions than basic oxygen steelmaking”.
The molten steel is then turned in to billets and rolled to make reinforcing bar (rebar) for use on HS2 construction sites.
Gabriella Nizam, head of sustainability and Strategy at Celsa UK said: “HS2 recognise the value of Celsa Steel UK’s low carbon steel, and we’re delighted our products are supporting the construction of a railway that will deliver zero carbon journeys for millions of people.
“Our steel is produced in an Electric Arc Furnace, with 98% of our raw material being UK sourced scrap metal. Our commitment to circularity combined with our sustainable production process, establishes us as a leader in environmentally friendly steel production in the UK. While our steel is already low carbon, we are striving to reduce our scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and becoming a net positive company by 2050.”
HGVC to exhibit at the Resource and Waste Management Expo

Driver training specialist HGVC is exhibiting at the RWM Expo 2023 taking place on 13 and 14 September.
The company will be based at stand R-K125 and visitors to the event learn about the latest Skills Bootcamps in HGV Driving and how they can secure government funding for training.
James Clifford, CEO of HGVC, said: “The Resource and Waste Management Expo is the leading event for the industry. It will be great to meet firms across the sector and understand what HGV training and development challenges they face.
“Our focus is on ensuring waste and recycling employers understand how to secure up to 70% of the funding needed to train new drivers or existing staff. While the immediate short-term driver shortage has subsided, the long-term chronic shortage persists and, as the cost-of-living crisis continues, this scheme is a lifeline for employers that need HGV drivers.”
Taking place at the NEC Birmingham, the free-to-attend event will be spread across 3 indoor halls and an added 10,000m2 of outdoor exhibition space. The show also runs alongside 3 co-located events, together forming the Environmental Services & Solutions Expo (ESS), forming the UK’s largest event dedicated to showcasing the latest innovations and solutions in the fields of circular economy, net-zero emissions, sustainability and biodiversity conservation.
