The fully operational sites will handle over 80,000 tonnes of waste and recyclables each year between them, including materials collected from households in the districts of Bassetlaw and Newark.

Construction was carried out as part of Veolia’s ongoing infrastructure programme under its 26-year waste management contract with the county council.

Donald Macphail, Midlands regional director for Veolia said: “Facilities such as the transfer stations provide a vital function to the overall management of waste in the county and represent just one facet of a comprehensive network of facilities required by the contract to manage Nottinghamshire’s waste.”

Norfolk councils award framework textile bank contract

Cookstown Textile Recyclers have been awarded a framework contract for the collection of used clothing and other fabrics from bring banks across four Norfolk councils.

Under the four year deal, Cookstown will provide and maintain bring banks and collect textiles from approximately 75 sites across Norfolk.  Once collected, the material will be taken to their depot in Hertfordshire where it is bulked up and transported to the facility in Ireland.

Cookstown estimate that 65% of the materials will be sent for re-use in Africa and Asia, while the other 35% will be sent to pulping mills in the UK to be used as fillings for mattresses.

Broadland district council, the lead authority on the framework, has made the arrangement alongside North Norfolk district council, Breckland council, and Great Yarmouth borough council.

Other Norfolk authorities will also have the choice of whether they want to opt-in to the framework.

Peter Fisher, operations manager at Cookstown Textile Recyclers, said: “We are delighted to have won the contract for the four Norfolk councils and will work to provide an efficient service.

“We hope members of the public will support the textile banks and save materials from going to landfill.”

Mik Richardson’s live art exhibit, which first came to the Norfolk town last year, has now been moved to Anchor Plaza where the artist paints murals inspired by life in the county on two skips.

Organised by local skip hire company, WT Skip Hire, with event management support from Great Yarmouth borough council, the project aims to grow the borough’s reputation for culture and heritage.

WT Skip Hire director, Gary Thurtle, said: “Last year’s event was incredibly successful and great fun. And the icing on the cake was a marketing award from enterpriseGY for the event. We were keen to do it again as Mik is great fun and so passionate about his work. Last year’s skips are still being used by customers and making an impression, and the new ones will be too.”

SWEEEP attended the annual Sci-Fi Festival held at Herne Bay on June 21, spreading the message that products powered by batteries and plugs could be recycled for free at household waste recycling sites in the county.

The company embraced the theme of the day, with SWEEEP staff explaining the WEEE Directive to Darth Vader and telling his loyal band of stormtroopers why they should embrace the power of recycling.

Duncan Simpson, director of sales and Marketing for Valpak, said: “Valpak is very happy to support the campaign to recycle more electrical and electronic equipment. Ensuring the message is heard throughout Kent, engaging all householders to get behind the force for good in recycling and making sure more materials end up being recycled rather than lost to the waste stream.”
