Wasteinsure has relaunched its insurance service for the UK waste and recycling sector, with a renewed focus on tailored risk coverage and sector-specific options.

The refreshed offer draws on more than 50 years of combined industry experience and is aimed at operators across skip hire, recycling centres, transfer stations, processing facilities and Energy from Waste (EfW) sites.

The relaunch comes amid increasing operational and regulatory pressures, including fire risk, hazardous materials handling, fleet exposure and tighter insurer conditions.

Damian Hayes, Sales Director at Wasteinsure, said: “Waste and recycling businesses deserve insurance expertise that truly understands their world.

“We’re filling a long-standing gap in the market by providing dedicated, sector-specific protection that goes far beyond generic cover.

“With stronger insurer relationships, enhanced specialist products, and market-leading risk management support, we’re giving waste operators the tailored insight and confidence they need to operate safely, efficiently, and with complete peace of mind.”

Decathlon has expanded its BuyBack scheme, enabling customers to trade in unwanted or outgrown bikes for instant payment.

Items can be assessed in-store, while a new online “quick quote” tool provides estimated values of up to 45% of the original retail price.

For 2026, Decathlon has introduced a one-hour bank transfer option, offering customer cash for returned equipment. Alternatively, customers can opt for gift cards to maximise value on future purchases.

Returned bikes are services and refurbished before resale through the retailer’s Second Life range.

Since launching in 2023, more than 10,000 items have been returned.

Chris Allen, Sustainability Leader at Decathlon UK, commented: “This year, our BuyBack service offers customers instant cash for their unwanted or outgrown bikes, helping their pockets as well as our planet.”

Backshield introduces floating cover solution for AD sector

Backshield Waste Services has introduced the Covex modular floating cover system to the UK, targeting slurry and digestate lagoons across agriculture and anaerobic digestion (AD) sectors.

Manufactured from recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the system floats directly on lagoon surfaces without fixed frameworks, using integrated ballast for stability in variable conditions.

Already deployed internationally in agricultural, mining and industrial water storage, Covex is being brought to the UK under an exclusive distribution agreement.

The system is suited to digestate storage at AD plants, where materials certified to PAS110 are reused as biofertiliser, supporting nutrient recycling.

Backshield is preparing its first UK installation, which will act as a reference site for wider adoption across the sector.

Paul Palmer, Director at Backshield Waste Services, said: “As environmental expectations continue to evolve, lagoon management is becoming a more visible part of both agricultural and anaerobic digestion operations.

“Covex provides a practical and robust solution that aligns with these changing requirements.”
