One comes from WRAP, another is a resource for businesses in the South East of England, a third covers can recycling and a fourth provides local information for residents of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
WRAP has launched a website to provide businesses with “all the information they need to buy, process, collect and sell recycled products and materials.” Covering mainly glass, paper, plastics and wood, the site – at wrap.org.uk – links to other websites worldwide in order to put users in touch with comprehensive resources.
Businesses specifically based in South East England are targeted by www.egeneration.co.uk
This site was developed through a partnership of business, NGO and public sector organisations in the South East and is underpinned by the Sustainable Business Partnerships which help businesses improve their efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Minimisation
The website provides best practice guidance and advice on topics such as waste minimisation and sustainable transport, to help businesses to reduce waste and increase profits. Registered users can upload case studies and use the interactive benchmarking tool, which measures waste, water and energy performance against industry standards.
Melanie Sealey, egeneration marketing manager, commented: “The site provides easy access to a wide range of free advice and support in areas where businesses would normally have to pay consultancy fees.”
Animated characters guide users through Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling’s www.cashforcans.co.uk
The site, funded by PRN revenue, uses cartoon figures to explain how Cash for Cans recycling works and where it happens.
Young users can play the “Shoot Out” game in which they zap “contaminants” from deliveries of aluminium cans and take an interactive tour of the company’s recycling process in Warrington, Cheshire.
Informal
National Manager Rick Hindley described the thinking behind the site: “Although it has an informal feel, the underlying message throughout is that recycling aluminium drink cans is a habit worth getting into. Using the cartoon characters will help us appeal to a younger audience. These are the adults of tomorrow and we need their support to ensure the continued success and growth of our business.”
Also making use of colourful design and cartoons is www.recap.co.uk (REcycling in CAmbridgeshire and Peterborough). The site, launched by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Joint Waste Management Strategy Partnership, gives readers advice on where to recycle household rubbish, how to compost and news on services provided by district authorities in the Strategy Partnership.
Maggie Kutasi, recycling co-ordinator with the Joint Waste Strategy Partnership, explained why the site was so important now: “Local authorities throughout the country currently have to meet stringent targets imposed by the UK government and European Union to increase their recycling figures. Raising awareness to encourage more public participation is one way of achieving this.”
