The scheme was passed by the planning committee yesterday after its chair approved the plant with a casting vote.
The new 225,000 tonne energy-from-waste facility, described by Onyx as “state of the art,” will replace an older one at the site on Barnard Road. Construction will begin in early 2003.
Councillor Tim Rippon, chair of the City Centre and East Area planning board, said: “There are significant environmental benefits including expanding Sheffield's District Heating Scheme, reducing landfill and increasing energy recovery. The application is an improvement on the current plant and therefore it is acceptable.”
Edward Thomas, development director for Onyx, said: “Onyx is pleased that the City council agrees with our assessment that an energy recovery facility is the best practicable environmental option for the city within our wider proposals for waste reduction and recycling.”
“We are very keen to continue our relationship with the local community. We have plans to set up liason groups with local representatives and members' views will be heard and fed into our decision-making process.”
