New recycling operations director for Smurfit Kappa

Mr Berrill will oversee the companys paper and board recycling collection operations, and will have responsibility for the production, logistical, environmental, quality and health & safety processes in Smurfit Kappas recycling depots across the UK, replacing former operations director Gary Grant.

Mr Berrill joined the company over 20 years ago, and was appointed operations director of Smurfit Corrugated, Smurfit Kappa Groups manufacturing concern in 1999. Before taking up the operations director post, he undertook a 12-month business exchange to Inland Packaging USA in 1998, during which time he oversaw a waste reduction project which saved the company an estimated $400,000 per year.

Experience

Commenting on the appointment, Smurfit Kappa Recyclings managing director Simon Weston, said: We are delighted that Matthew will be joining us from Smurfit Kappa Corrugated bringing his knowledge and experience to the recycling collection side of our business. Our operations offer customers flexibility in supplying material to us while maintaining the highest standards, as recognised by our recent Cabon Trust Standard and BS EN ISO14001 accreditations.

The appointment is Smurfit Kappas second high profile personnel change in recent months, with Andrew Perkins joining the company from Aylesford Newsprint in December 2011 as commercial director (see letsrecycle.com story), to replace the outgoing Martin Blood who has stepped down after more than 40 years within the company.

Smurfit Kappa Recycling provide recycling services including recovery of cardboard, office papers and plastics, security shredding and waste disposal.

Recovery

Smurfit Kappas two UK-based paper mills reprocess over 500,000 tonnes of paper per year, around 12% of the UKs recovered paper volume. The company also operates seven recycling depots located across the country in Birmingham, Blackburn, Glasgow, Nottingham, Snodland, Southampton and Tamworth.

The company uses recovered paper and card to produce new packaging materials, and claims that with an 84% recycling rate, it is has the highest recycling performance across the UK packaging production sector.
