Neill resigns as United Waste disappears into SITA brand

Peter Neill, former chief executive of Lancashire Waste Services, and more recently director of the United Waste northern region has resigned.

His resignation, confirmed today by a SITA spokesman, is understood to have come yesterday, ahead of an announcement today that United Waste will come under the SITA banner from January 1 2002.

Mr Neill is well known in the waste management sector where where he has been involved in the industry for more than 20 years. He had previously modernised the Environmental Services Association when he was its chief executive in the 1990s. He was also one of the first appointments to the board of Entrust, becoming a director in July 1996 as well as being an early enthusiast for the work of the Landfill Tax Credits Scheme.

A spokesman for Entrust, the landfill tax regulator, today said that Mr Neill remained on the organisation's board and with his knowledge and experience of the sector can remain on it.

Following the merger of SITA and United Waste to form Britain’s largest waste management company earlier this year, all the companies of the former United Waste Group will trade as SITA from 1 January 2002, SITA said today.

The merger of SITA and United Waste follows the decision of their parent company, SUEZ, to consolidate its waste management activities under the SITA banner. United Waste Group companies such as A&J; Bull, Lancashire Waste Services, Capital Security Shredding, A W Lawson and Kirklees Waste Services, will change their trading name to SITA. Customers of United Waste already are being contacted and informed of the change of name.

Ian Goodfellow, managing director of the enlarged UK group said: “SITA and United Waste together form a strong and dynamic business. The merger is good news for the company and our customers as we strive to provide them with better and competitively priced services. Operating under the single SITA banner gives the Company a common identity and focus that will best serve our customers.”

SITA has been a growing force in Britain’s waste industry since the late 1980s when it won its first waste collection contract. Since that time SITA has grown through sales and acquisitions and is projecting annualised revenues in excess of 500 million. It currently employs about 7,500 people and while confirming there have been job losses through merger with United Waste, it has not released the numbers involved.
