NE Lincolnshire receives Commission praise for recycling

The Audit Commission has praised North East Lincolnshire council for its “extensive” recycling infrastructure.

In a report published by the Commission, North East Lincolnshire was found to have a “good” two star service, with “promising” prospects for the improvement.

”Because of the financial situation in North East Lincolnshire at the moment we are having to rely on external funding.“
– Ian Graham, North East Lincolnshire

The report said: “The council has an extensive recycling infrastructure, complemented by targeted kerbside collections, which is continuing to improve the council's performance and meet statutory targets.”

North East Lincolnshire currently has a triple box collection for its recyclables. A green box for glass, blue box for paper and orange box for cans are collected fortnightly. On alternating weeks a brown wheeled bin is collected for garden waste.

At present there are 34,500 households on both schemes, around 6,000 receive garden waste collections only and almost 3,000 receive the triple box service only.

Ian Graham, recycling officer at North East Lincolnshire said: “There are around 70,000 households in NE Lincolnshire and we are hoping to have the whole area covered by both schemes by 2010.

The most recent phase of the garden waste scheme was rolled out at the end of February to around 10,000 households. The council also has 40 bring sites, including 15 plastic bottle collection sites, across the area and two civic amenity sites.

Newlincs

North East Lincolnshire currently has a 25 year waste management contract with Newlincs Development Ltd, a subsidiary of the French-owned Cyclerval.

The contract began in late 1999 and involved the implementation of a small energy-from-waste facility, which has the capacity to process up to 56,000 tonnes of the council's waste each year.

Mr Graham said: “The plant is exclusively there for waste arising from North East Lincolnshire. It has so far taken about 43,000 tonnes of waste and by the end of the first year this could be nearer 48,000 tonnes.”
