Nantycaws recycling site in commissioning after battery fire rebuild

CWM Environmental has announced that its new resource recovery facility (RRF) at Nantycaws, Carmarthenshire, has entered commissioning.

Full operations are scheduled to begin at the end of May, subject to successful completion of the commissioning programme.

The multimillion-pound development marks a major milestone for the company following the destruction of its previous materials recycling facility (MRF) in 2021.

That incident, caused by a discarded lithium-ion battery, resulted in a fire that completely engulfed the site.

The new RRF not only replaces the lost infrastructure but represents an upgrade in both capacity and technology.

Once fully operational, the facility is designed to process up to 80,000 tonnes of source-segregated and dry mixed recycling annually.

Following completion of the main construction and installation works, the site has now entered a four-week commissioning period. During this phase, all systems will be rigorously tested, calibrated and optimised ahead of live operations.

A CWM Environmental spokesperson said: “The RRF is a vital piece of Circular Economy infrastructure for Wales.  It has been developed with maximum flexibility to accommodate the forthcoming Waste Reforms and the ever-changing waste industry.

“Once operational, it will boost recycling performance, strengthen treatment infrastructure and support the long-term management of valuable resources here in Wales.”

The Nantycaws RRF has been developed as a flexible recycling facility equipped with a range of sorting and safety technologies.

Key systems installed at the site include optical sorters, ballistic separators, magnetic belts and eddy current systems, designed to improve the separation and recovery of recyclable materials.

Additional infrastructure such as bag splitters, twin ram balers and automated bunkers will aim to improve handling and processing throughout the plant.

The facility also incorporates AI-driven software to enhance sorting accuracy, alongside advanced fire suppression systems aimed at reducing the risk of incidents similar to the 2021 blaze.

Commissioning activities will cover all major operational areas, including conveyors, control systems, balers, bunkers and safety equipment, ensuring the plant is fully prepared for sustained operation.

The spokesperson added: “Entering commissioning is a major step forward for the Nantycaws Resource Recovery Facility.

“The main build and installation works are now complete, and this next phase is about making sure every part of the facility is tested, calibrated and ready to perform.

“This is a complex facility with a range of advanced sorting and recovery systems, so a successful commissioning phase is essential.”
