Mondi and Traceless design ‘bio-circular’ coating

Mondi, a packaging and paper company, has announced a collaboration with biomaterial engineers Traceless to develop a “bio-circular” coating solution derived from agricultural by-products. This solution aims to replace traditional plastic coatings on packaging.

According to Mondi, the coating is made from “renewable plant-based materials” sourced from agricultural residues, negating the need for fossil raw materials.

It has claimed the solution will save up to 95% of greenhouse gas emissions created in the production and disposal processes, compared to virgin plastics.

The bio-circular coating granulates are produced in Traceless’ pilot plant and applied to Mondi’s kraft paper at Mondi’s research and development centre, where the coated paper undergoes testing in the company’s laboratories.

Traceless has highlighted that paper coated with the solution resists water, oxygen and fat while “maintaining printability” for its customer base. The solution aims to be recyclable in existing recycling streams throughout Europe.

‘Next steps’

Marko Schuster, COO of functional paper and films at Mondi, said: “We are always looking at what the next steps are in creating truly circular packaging, following our customers’ demands as well as our innovative spirit. This is a fantastic example of how we can combine our R&D forces to be one step ahead in the sustainable packaging game, contributing to a circular economy.”

‘Impact’

Anne Lamp, CEO and co-founder of Traceless, said: “Our mission is to make pollution and waste history by using materials that impact positively. The journey so far has been exciting and insightful, teaching us valuable lessons to ensure our packaging delivers excellent protection.

“By working with Mondi – its team and its machines, products and processes – we are adapting our existing expertise in innovative biomaterials to reduce plastic barrier coatings in packaging. The goal is to create a truly fit-for-purpose product that works for as wide a range of applications and industries as possible.”
