Rockware is known to be keen to get over the message that it can use more cullet for bottlemaking as it faces competition for the material from the aggregates sector. At present, the company uses about 200,000 tonnes a year of cullet processed by the Reuse plant which is adjacent to Rockware's own bottlemaking factory at Knottingley near Doncaster. Next year, Reuse is hoping to supply as much as 400,000 tonnes of sorted and cleaned cullet to Rockware.
The cullet for bottlemaking message will also be expounded to more than 80 local authority recycling officers next month on visits arranged during the annual Larac conference. One message will be that using cullet in bottlemaking provides energy savings of about 28% compared to a zero figure for aggregates production.
At the launch of glassforever, last Friday at the Kingfisher School in Oldham, Mr Meacher said: “I congratulate Rockware and their partners for creating this wonderful educational resource that goes right to the hear of sustainable development.”
