The RMC Environment Fund distributes 2 million a year to environmental and community projects in the UK and is managed by the Environment Council and supported by RMC Group, through the Landfill Tax Credits Scheme.
The Fund supported a project earlier this year which saw businesses, local authorities, government and environmental groups meet to discuss their ideas on a waste strategy. London Waste Action led the initiative which resulted in a waste management plan for London and was presented to the Mayor to include in his draft strategy. Ken Livingstone has now requested that London Waste Action re-start the meetings to help the further development of the strategy.
The Greater London Authority (GLA) is currently considering the merits of the strategy and is due to report back to the Mayor in November. London Waste Action will report to the Mayor later in the year.
Alison Fleming, of the RMC Environment Fund, said: “This further stage of the process, aims to strengthen consensus and create a successful partnership between all stakeholders to make waste minimization in London a reality.”
Targets
The RMC Environment Fund's annual review for 1999-2000 shows that it is already meeting new government targets for the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme and has so far given over 66% to sustainable waste management projects. New targets were announced in May and require 65% of Landfill Tax Credits to be directed towards sustainable waste management projects.
Malcolm Aickin, chairman of the RMC Environment Fund, said the fund was committed to supporting projects that assisted in establishing markets for waste, as well as better sustainable waste management practices. He said: “The fund already meets the challenging targets that the government has announced. We look forward to supporting many more environmental initiatives particularly those creating new processes for turning waste into value.”
The fund has received praise from Lord Cranbrook, chairman of Entrust who said: “The RMC Environment Fund is proving that the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme can – and is – delivering the type of project that helps to reduce waste and ensure it is managed in the most sustainable way. In doing so they are making a very real contribution to solving one of the most pressing environmental concerns facing us today.”
