The project has been provided by London Remade – which provided advice and support to the Trust. Included in the overhaul will be the provision of recycling bins across the hospital – with staff encouraged to recycle all consumer waste – including paper, cardboard, plastics, cans and glass.
The Trust will be using a co-mingled recycling system, with all items placed in the same bin, posters have also been placed across the hospital to remind staff to recycle.
Legislation
Changes in European legislation now require all Trusts to demonstrate good practice in environmental performance.
Philip Homes, facilities manager for Chelsea and Westminster hospital, said: “People are now used to recycling at home and it is a natural step to introduce similar processes in the workplace.”

A similar scheme is now to be set up at Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust in December. London Remade will once again assist the trust a move towards more sustainable waste management in line with legislative requirements and the need to make financial savings, the Trust said.
Charles Jennings, health sector waste advisor for London Remade, also added: “It is encouraging that hospitals such as Chelsea and Westminster regard recycling as integral to their future. If every hospital followed their lead a significant impact on the levels of waste being produced could be achieved. We hope this is just the beginning.”
