Fire still burning at Siteserv MRF in Wales

By Michael Holder

Eight firefighters are still working to tackle flames at SiteServ Recyclings materials recycling facility (MRF) in South Wales more than a week after the blaze first started.

The fire has been contained to the building in which it started and fire crews are working to remove and extinguish burning material, Vale of Glamorgan council confirmed.

SiteServ said it is also currently working with South Wales Fire & Rescue Service to slowly demolish what remains of the buildings in the interest of safety on the Llandow Industrial Estate, Vale of Glamorgan.

The council said on Monday (December 2) it would be some time before the blaze is fully extinguished.

The fire service and police are investigating the cause of the fire and air quality is being monitored.

A statement from SiteServ said today: Whilst we remain unsure of the source of the fire, we are working with both the fire service and police to establish possible causes. We are otherwise operating business as usual.

Smoke

The fire first broke out at around 5.15am on November 26, affecting recyclable material such as paper, plastic and other non-hazardous wastes, with plumes of smoke visible from as far away as Cardiff city centre several miles away (see letsrecycle.com story).

Plumes of smoke were continuing to rise and disperse from the site this week. Although the council said there was little concern for public health, it advised residents who noticed any smoke to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.

The fire was the second to hit the companys Llandow site in a matter of weeks, after a significant blaze broke out elsewhere on the site at SiteServs waste transfer station on November 5 (see letsrecycle.com story).

SiteServ Recycling was set up around 15 years ago and processes 133,000 tonnes of business waste material each year, including paper, plastics, wood, metal and hazardous waste. The firm also claims to process 18,000 tonnes of waste from local authorities.
