A fire earlier this month at at the company's site in Chatham Docks, in north Kent, was attended by 10 fire crews at its height before it was contained to 1,300 tonnes of paper. It is understood to be the third such incident to occur at the depot since 2005.
Nordic – which currently process 6,000 tonnes of paper a week – was hit by a fire affecting 1,700 tonnes of paper at the 18-acre water side facility in 2006 (see letsrecycle.com story) and another involving 2,000 tonnes in 2005, which saw the Navy called in to help contain the blaze. Fire
The most recent fire, which broke out at 7.20pm on the evening of August 12. Graham Gash, Kent Fire and Rescue Service's operations manager for the north division, said: “We have been working very closely with the management of Nordic Recycling and their insurers following previous incidents and a phased approach for onsite improvements is in place.”
“This was evident at the fire last week when the blaze was contained to 1,300 tonnes of paper. In the main, this was due to a speedy attack on the fire facilitated by a new water outlet manifold installed following advice from KFRS last year. This partnership approach has been very successful and more improvements are planned,” he added.
Kent Fire and Rescue stated that a cause of the fire had not been determined with investigations yet to be concluded.
Nordic Recycling declined to comment.
