The “City Limits” project is a collaboration between the Institute of Wastes Management (IWM), The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the sustainability consultant Best Foot Forward (BFF). The 220,000 project is funded by landfill tax credits through Biffaward with 5% contributions from both the GLA and ICE.
The results will provide a baseline measure of the city’s environmental impacts against which progress towards sustainable development can be measured year on year. Also included is a set of scenarios for Greater London to illustrate the environmental implications of a range of environmental conservation options and waste minimisation and management strategies.
A key part of the study will be to work out the links between consumption and waste generation.
The final report on Greater London should be produced by July 2002 in time for the international Rio +10 summit where it is hoped the results will be presented.
