The company explained that the cylinder was crushed by a blade and nearly cut in half. The cylinder was empty at the time, but if full, ISM said it could have caused a fatal explosion.
The company – which provides skip hire and waste management services to companies throughout the North-West – has since been able to identify where the cylinder came from, and has addressed the issue with the customer who was “extremely apologetic and cooperative”.
As a result of the incident, it has issued a safety notice (below) to its customers, and warned of the items which must be collected separately, and not included in general skips.
In the safety notice, ISM said that items which are dangerous and require a separate collection include batteries, tyres, asbestos, animal waste, glass and combustible items or hot substances that could cause a fire.
Journey
The company stressed that as every item of waste may be subsequently handled by a person, the company needs to ensure that every item of waste remains in a “safe stage at all stages” in its onward journey from a customers’ site to its facility.
ISM added that if any customers are unsure on what waste complies with the arrangements in place, they should contact the company, which will assess the situation and suggest alternative arrangements if necessary.
