Crews were alerted shortly after 3pm, with around 30 firefighters from across Cambridgeshire mobilised to the scene.
On arrival, they were met with a well-developed fire involving approximately 2,000 square metres of refuse, producing thick smoke visible from miles away.
Fire engines from Ely, Cottenham, Littleport, Cambridge, Chatteris and Soham attended, supported by a water carrier from Ramsey.
Station Commander Andy Hill, one of the officers in charge of the incident, said: “After being alerted about the fire our Control operators sent two fire engines and our water carrier immediately to the scene, as we know the water supply to the site is a significant issue.
“The initial crews worked hard to try and contain the fire but quickly requested more fire engines to assist, not only for water but for the firefighters to try and tackle the fire from multiple places.
“Throughout the night they have worked hard and made progress with this deep-seated fire.”
Additional fire crews brought in
As the incident developed, additional crews were called in from Gamlingay, Huntingdon, March, Cambourne, St Ives and Burwell, alongside a further water carrier from Kempston.
Fire crews remained at the site into Thursday, with specialist advisors, heavy machinery and equipment brought in to help bring the incident under control.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and an investigation is underway.
Residents in the surrounding area have been advised to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution due to ongoing smoke, while road closures remain in place nearby.
The incident follows another recent fire in the county, after a blaze broke out last week at a recycling centre in March.
