Industrial boost for Veolia with purchase of KDC Contractors

Veolia has strengthened its presence in the decommisioning and radioactive waste sector with the acquisition of Manchester-based KDC Contractors Ltd.

KDC operates principally in the nuclear, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, energy and utility, and industrial markets from offices in Manchester and Falkirk.

The company reported a turnover in 2017 of £16.6 million with a gross margin on sales of 23%. In its annual report, KDC indicated that it was tendering for a good number of future projects.

Industrial growth

For Veolia, which provides a range of waste management services, the deal is seen as a significant addition to its work in the industrial sector where it has oil and gas as an area of business it is actively seeking to grow, in part because of pressures on the municipal front. It also increases the amount of scrap metal handled by the company although it does not have its own metal recycling business.

Strategic

Commenting on the transaction Kevin Hurst, chief operating officer for industrial customers at Veolia said: “The strategic integration of KDC will expand our onshore and offshore decommissioning, technical demolition and land remediation capabilities.”

And, Mr Hurst added that the acquisition of KDC would “enable us to deliver more innovative solutions, and build the circular economy by realising the financial and environmental value of these materials.”

Veolia has won a number of contracts for work involving offshore decommissioning, demolition and recycling within recent years which links in with the expertise and equipment at KDC.

Demolition

Recent work by KDC has included the demolition (pictured above) of two gas holders at Johnstone, Scotland for SGN. The first gasholder was of below ground, spiral guided construction with four lifts of riveted steel and a brick and puddled clay tank and had stood for over 82 years.

The second, built in 1913, was an above ground, spiral guided holder with two lifts of riveted steel and a steel tank.

KDC noted earlier this year that over the past seven years it had carried out the demolition of gasholders across 25 sites for all of the UK gas network providers.
