An increasing number of councils are weighing up whether or not there might be advantages to bringing services in-house. Others are testing the market in terms of whether they can gain greater income from their contracts, partly encouraged by the charity WRAP which has indicated that councils could gain more from the income value earned from recyclables.
Westminster
Now, to discuss these issues and more, the first letsrecycle.com conference of 2016 will take place in Westminster on 28 January.
The event – the Remunicipalisation Conference – or ‘Remu’ for short, will examine how local authorities can achieve efficiencies across waste and recycling services as well as assessing the benefits, or otherwise, of working with the private sector.
Opening speakers at the conference will be Professor Colin Haslam, a specialist in the local government sector, and Jacob Haylor, executive directive of the Environmental Services Association.
Liverpool
Other morning speakers include Liverpool city councillor Stephen Munby and Glenn Fleet, head of waste management at Warwickshire county council. And, presentations from contractors will include an address by Roger Edwards, managing director of Biffa Municipal.
The conference will take place at the Queen Elizabeth II conference centre in Westminster, London, close to Westminster tube station and will run from 10.00 am to 4.00pm.
