In a communication published this week (27 July), the government body said the tax will “impact a wide range of industries” and encouraged groups to share information to ensure everyone can “fully engage”.
In the March budget, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that the tax on plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled content will come into force in April 2022, and will be set at £200 a tonne (see letsrecycle.com story).
Alongside the budget, the chancellor launched a consultation to provide more information on the tax design and to seek information from stakeholders.
Extension
In a welcomed move, this was extended in late April from 20 May to 20 August, to allow the responses from “many sectors which have been impacted” by the coronavirus pandemic (see letsrecycle.com story).
HMRC has now moved to remind organisations to encourage their members to participate, with less than three weeks to go until the consultation concludes.
“The tax will impact a wide range of industries including retail, construction and manufacturing”
The HMRC communication said: “The tax will impact a wide range of industries including retail, construction and manufacturing. You can find out more information about how the tax might affect you in the consultation document.”
It added: “ If you are a Business Representative Organisations or Trade Association we would encourage you to share this information with your members to ensure they have the opportunity to engage fully in the consultation”.
The consultation document can be read here. Separate consultations from the government’s Resources and Waste Strategy have been pushed back to January 2021 (see letsrecycle.com story).
