Highlander to enter wood recycling market

Glasgow-based Highlander International is to enter the wood recycling market next month when it launches a wood recycling and pallet recovery service at its East Kilbride site near Glasgow.

Highlander is set to enter the wood recycling market from 1 April

Highlander has its roots in the paper recycling industry, and says it is the largest independent paper recycler in Scotland.

Highlander has now invested in new machinery to fulfil “an ever growing demand for wood and pallet recovery and recycling”. This will be installed at its East Kilbride facility. Many of the pallets will be sourced from local companies.

The shredder will allow the company to reduce its transport emissions as it no longer has to take wood to a third-party supplier

A spokesperson for the company explained: “The comprehensive service consists of waste pallet collections, recovery of pallets in good condition, recycling of damaged pallets through shredding and subsequent onward transport of the wood chips, contributing to the circular wood recycling process.”

Shredder

By introducing its own wood shredder on site, Highlander International is able to reduce its monthly transport to a third party wood recycling facility from 27 journeys to three, thus reducing its logistical carbon emissions by almost 89% – a saving of over 10 tons of CO2 every year and with further plans to install renewable energy sources this year.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Pallet recovery and recycling is a sustainable solution that offers numerous benefits to businesses and the environment. By reusing and repurposing pallets, businesses can save money, conserve natural resources, and reduce their carbon footprint. Therefore, companies should consider incorporating pallet recycling into their waste reduction strategies, to create a more sustainable future.

“Highlander’s aim is to provide cost-effective and efficient paper and wood recycling services to individuals, businesses, and organisations. They are dedicated to reducing waste and preserving natural resources through the responsible collection, processing, and re-purposing of these resources.”
