‘Heroic’ refuse truck driver saves life of dog

Kent-based Lili Waste Services is celebrating the heroic work of its refuse truck driver Alex.

Alex and Buddy

The driver saved the life of a dog during his regular Waste Recycling round on Four Oaks Road in Paddock Wood, Kent.

In December, Alex spotted a limping, distressed dog struggling to make its way down the road. Acting without hesitation, he and his colleague Tom pulled over their commercial waste vehicle to assist.

Alex carefully picked up the injured dog, ensuring he was safe and comfortable in the cab before driving straight to the nearest veterinary clinic near Tonbridge.

The vets were able to treat the dog – named Buddy – for his minor injuries. A scan of Buddy’s microchip revealed that his family had been searching for him and he was returned to his overjoyed owners by the end of the day.

Alex told Letsrecycle.com: “I just acted instinctively after seeing the poor dog in obvious distress, and I am so happy that the beloved pet was reunited with its owner.”

Lili Waste said that the trip to the veterinary clinic didn’t slow Alex down who, alongside Tom, was able to ensure that all customers’ wheelie bins were collected as normal.

A representative from Lili Waste said: “At Lili Waste, we’re incredibly proud to have refuse collection operatives like Alex and Tom who go above and beyond, whether it’s serving our customers or lending a hand (or paw) to those in need.”

Family-owned Lili Waste Services has operated across the UK for over 20 years.
