The acquisition sees the addition of three waste processing facilities to the expanding Group, located in Bradford, Nottingham, and Rainham in Essex – all of which are installed with Tempico Rotoclave technology for the treatment of healthcare waste.

GWB has been providing clinical waste treatment for the NHS for over 20 years, and currently works with 12 major NHS trusts and a mix of public and private sector businesses throughout the UK.

The firm employs around 50 staff, and speaking to letsrecycle.com today, Healthcare Environmental Group marketing manager Paul Smart said ‘no redundancies’ were planned following the acquisition.

He added that GWB general manager Martin Helstrip would continue to manage the company and retain the NHS contracts, with no rebranding scheduled.

Healthcare Environmental Group is one of the largest independent full facilities waste and washroom management firms in the UK, and specialises in healthcare and hazardous wastes.

The firm operates its own fleet of fuel-efficient vehicles as well as a network of waste transfer stations and treatment facilities throughout the UK, with a combined permitted treatment capacity of over 250,000 tonnes per year.

It recently opened its new £10 million Northern headquarters and energy-from-waste facility at Shotts in Scotland, where the firm is capable of processing 35,000 tonnes of waste products per annum.

Garry Pettigrew, managing director of Healthcare Environmental Group said he believed the reputation of GWB would be of ‘huge’ benefit to the company in winning new contracts in the future.

Mr Pettigrew said:“I welcome GWB to the group and look forward to working with the clients and staff in the near future. GWB’s enviable history, customer service reputation and the addition of the new waste treatment facilities will be a huge benefit for the Group in winning new contracts and providing further capacity in the future.

“This latest acquisition ensures the Group can continue to provide a sustainable, high quality nationwide service whilst being competitive in the UK waste market.”

‘Complimentary’

Commenting on the acquisition, Mr Helstrip added:“We are delighted to have joined the Healthcare Group, when discussing the acquisition with the directors of HEG, the complimentary aspects of the two businesses made the decision an easy one.

“The combination of facilities, expertise and the ethos to drive efficiencies within the market is an extremely good fit. We are looking forward to integrating services to provide an industry leading service to our clients.”
