Hadfield Wood Recyclers picked up the Abraservice UK-sponsored Quality Product of the Year award for its bio-secure Easichick Poultry Bedding, which was developed after extensive consumer market research.

Judges described the product as a shining example of how good consumer focus and a professional approach to marketing and production can benefit the bottom line.

Elsewhere, managing director of Community Wood Recycling, Richard Mehmed, accepted the award for Best Partnership sponsored by A Jansen BV on behalf of the organisation and its partnership with 25 independent social enterprises.

The National Builders Collection Scheme waste wood collection service beat off stiff competition from biomass plant partnership O-Gen Plymtrek as well as SITA UK and RWE npower renewable. The scheme was commended by judges for creating jobs and volunteer opportunities for disadvantaged people.

Finally, the hard work of Countrystyles operations team at its Ridham dock facility in Kent was recognised with the Best Team or Site Manager of the Year award, sponsored by CBI Europe.

Judges said the Countrystyle team had shown incredible ability and drive to improve efficiency and throughput of its 24-hour wood processing operation, which sends quality product to export markets with positive sales results.

Sponsored Abraservice UK, A Jansen BV, CBI Europe, Firefly ab and Warwick Ward, the awards are open to WRA members, board mills, recyclers, energy companies, individuals, local authorities and the community sector and took place at Coombe Abbey Hotel.

A number of figures in the wood recycling industry also spoke about the likes of biomass energy and fire safety as part of the WRA conference, which took place at the same venue either side of the award ceremony (see letsrecycle.com story).
