Guidance produced for recycling newest electronic products

A document has been published to help explain how electronics producers can guide recyclers of WEEE in the future.

The guidance will help meet the demands of Europe's WEEE Directive, which requires electronics producers to provide information on the dismantling and recovery of any products they place on the market.

The European Electronics Recyclers Association has worked with the European Digital Technology Industry, the Household Appliance Manufacturers in Europe, and the American Electronics Association Europe in order to produce the guidance document.

According to the organisations, the guidance document sets out certain rules for a practical implementation of the requirements. The guidance will set out conditions for producers and treatment operators to discuss changes in the electronics recycling industry on a continual basis.

The guidance states: “Each producer should create an access point for recyclers to post questions on relation to their products, for example an alias too be used on the producer's internet site or via the organisation in charge of managing the producer responsibility.

“Producers will track information on agree, specified components and materials used in their equipment on the basis of having a positive presence at product level.”

In the guidance it is also suggested that producers and recyclers converse regularly on past and future technology trends in products as well as the technical evolutions of treatment operations. According to the EERA this will allow guidance to be updated when need be.
