The Oxford-based company has been reshaped to include S Grundon (Services) Ltd and S Grundon (Waste) Ltd as subsidiaries, although quarrying and aggregates operations will still be carried out by S Grundon (Ewelme) Ltd. Richard Skehens, a chartered surveyor who headed the company’s estates department for 19 years, has taken over from the recently-retired Tony Mitchell as managing director.

Energy recovery
The new MD was keen to point out that the £100 million waste treatment facility is on track. He said: “The internal management team and our external advisers are in place and the building of the construction compound is complete.”
The new plant will replace the current waste reduction facility – which ultimately still involves disposal by landfill – with a waste and energy recovery facility. The site’s existing MRF will be replaced by a temporary facility while construction is carried out. The existing clinical waste incinerator will also be relocated and rebuilt within the site, but will still continue to function throughout the construction period.
Mr Skehens said: “The foundations for the temporary MRF, which will enable us to maintain continuity of our existing recycling contracts during construction of the new facilities, are now being laid. We are actively marketing the plant capacity to waste producers and I am confident that the delivery of the £100million project remains on target.”
More developments planned
There appear to be several new developments on the Grundon plate this year. As well as the new plant at Colnbrook, Grundon has entered into a joint venture with a German company, SULO, to export fridges and freezers to the Continent for recycling. In the future, it is hoped to construct their own recycling facility at a site between Reading and Maidenhead.
Grundon also have plans to develop glass recycling and aerosol recycling, as well as re-vamping their clinical waste facility. Mr Skehens said: “We are currently researching new technologies for clinical waste to ensure that we can meet the forthcoming Hazardous Waste Directive.”
Board
In order to drive through the company’s ambitions, Mr Skehens will be joined on the new board of directors by technical director Stephen Roscoe and operations director Andrew Malone – who between them have 42 years of experience in the waste management industry – as well as Clayton Sullivan-Webb, the new company secretary.
Norman Grundon, Neil Grundon and Derek Steggall remain as chairman, development director and financial director respectively.
“2002 promises to be an eventful year,” Mr Skehens said, “I look forward to working with the new team to continue the company’s strong growth and development in a challenging marketplace.”
