Work has started clearing a newly-acquired two-acre site at Costain Street in Bootle, with hopes of a fully automated waste segregation system being installed and operational by mid-summer.
“Our new centre in Bootle could not be situated in a more convenient location to service the long-awaited need for this facility in Merseyside,”
– Jonathan Gaskell, Gaskell Waste Services
Commenting on the plant, managing director Jonathan Gaskell said: “This is a very exciting project for us and we are confident that it will be the most advanced waste facility in the UK.”
“Encouraging recycling and diverting waste from landfill sites are key national priorities, with both business and consumers becoming increasingly aware of the need to reduce waste. Our new centre in Bootle could not be situated in a more convenient location to service the long-awaited need for this facility in Merseyside,” Mr Gaskell added.
Gaskell Waste Services was founded in 1991 and specializes in the collection of non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste from businesses. This is the company’s first major investment in recycling.
Licensed to process up to 75,000 tonnes of material a year, initially the new facility will provide employment for 10 staff but Mr Gaskell has said that he expects that number will double in the near future.
Technology
The company is using screening and sizing technology sourced from Austria, Germany, Holland and Ireland, which can process 25 tonnes of commercial waste every hour and 75 tonnes of construction and demolition waste an hour.
Mr Gaskell told letsrecycle.com that this is the first time such equipment has been used in the UK for waste. The new system will allow metals, glass, paper, plastic, wood and textiles to be extracted “quickly and efficiently”. The company believes that recycling rates of up to 50% will be achieved on waste coming into the site.
