Firefighters remain at the scene of Kilwinning recycling centre fire

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) remain at the scene of a fire that occured within a battery recycling centre in Byrehill Place, Kilwinning, Scotland.

The incident was reported at 10pm on Monday (8 April). At its height, around 40 firefighters were mobilised to the scene after the alarm was raised.

The site is owned by Fenix Battery Recycling.

‘Under control’

In an update this afternoon (11 April), area commander Ian McMeekin, local senior officer for East, North and South Ayrshire, said: “Two fire appliances are in attendance and work remains ongoing to gain full and safe access to the site to extinguish the fire.

“The fire is under control, and dampening down efforts are continuing.

“We continue to work alongside partners to minimise the disruption to the local community and bring this incident to a safe conclusion.”

In the days since the incident, SFRS urged residents to not be alarmed if they noticed an increase in smoke plumage coming from the site as works commenced.

SFRS said at the time: “We urge residents to remain at home with windows and doors shut. If travelling through smoke, motorists should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.”

SFRS said it will continue to provide updates when possible.
