DS Smith points to growth after SCA deal

The purchase of the SCA operation was completed in July 2012 and in a statement this month, DS Smith Recycling said there is enthusiasm amongst the DS Smith Recycling team to have such a great company joining its own extensive operations.

The statement went on to note that the expertise, knowledge, reach and capabilities contained within the business will enhance DS Smiths existing innovative and sustainable offering both in the UK and across Europe.

Details of workforce numbers have not been released but the company said that there had been no job losses as a result of the acquisition. However, a review of the companys capabilities to ensure it fits in with the customer base is underway.

The acquisition has enhanced DS Smiths recycling network in the UK and strengthened its existing operational presence in Europe.

As a result, well be able to further improve our service, especially for our national contracts, as well as take the DS Smith ethos to new customers.

The SCA recycling deal brought with it SCA Recyclings materials recycling facility in Southampton.

DS Smith Recycling said as a consequence of taking over the MRF, it was now in a position to lead and shape how mixed recycling collections can be managed to ensure maximum quality of material at output. And, it emphasised that quality would be a focus: DS Smith Recyclings commitment to quality means that source separation of materials is its priority to ensure the highest value is gained from recyclate.

Mr McGuinness added: Adding this MRF into our operations complements our position on source segregation of fibre material and gives us greater control to ensure high quality fibre is supplied into our mills. It is only through the reliable supply of high-quality fibre that UK mills are able to continue to grow and contribute to the UK’s green economy.

Going forward, he said that through the combined expertise and knowledge of DS Smith Recycling and SCA Recycling, the company would continue to deliver innovative and sustainable recycling services to its large and varied customer base. Furthermore, capturing high quality fibre for the DS Smith Group will support the companys goal to become the leading supplier of recycled packaging for consumer goods.

The managing director of SCA Recycling UK, Ken Stevens, explained to letsrecycle.com that in the wake of the deal with DS Smith he had retained his title of managing director of SCA Recycling UK.

He said: There is a great opportunity now for the DS Smith business going forward and we will be involved in all commodities. I am pleased that the SCA Recycling businesses is now part and parcel of a bigger picture, that is the exciting bit.
