Devon councils renew contract with Aylesford Newsprint

The local authorities in Devon have renewed their contract to provide newspapers and magazines to recycled newsprint manufacturer Aylesford Newsprint.

The district councils involved in providing the newsprint for recycling include East Devon, Exeter, North Devon, Plymouth and South Hams as well as Devon county council. The councils are renewing the contract for a further ten years after the original eight year contract proved to be a success.

In March 2002, the Devon authorities passed the 100,000 tonne milestone of collected paper and last year alone Aylesford received 25,000 tonnes of used newspaper and magazines for recycling from the councils.

Ben Jennings, waste management officer at Devon county council, said: “We are delighted to have negotiated the extension of this important contract with Aylesford Newsprint. Having secure markets for the material we collect is essential to the success of our recycling efforts in Devon.”

The papers for the contract are collected through kerbside collections and bring banks and are recycled to produce Aylesford's 'Renaissance' brand of 100% recycled newsprint for use by UK and European newspaper publishers.

Alan Peers, recycling area manager at Aylesford Newsprint, said: “We are really pleased that our relationship with Devon councils will be continuing. The collaboration has been very successful so far and we look forward to strengthening Devon's recycling scheme over the next ten years.”
