Another round of the Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund will see 90m made available in 2004-05 and 45m in 2005-06. Bidding details will be provided by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in September.
Mr Morley said, “How the country deals with its waste is becoming one of the most significant social, economic and environmental issues facing society today. I am very pleased therefore to tell local authorities that we are inviting bids, in September of this year, for a further 135 million for local waste minimisation, recycling and composting initiatives via DEFRA's Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund.”
From 2005-06, funding will also be made available under a new Waste Performance Reward Grant. This new grant will provide “pump priming” funds to local authorities with subsequent reward grants for meeting agreed performance criteria. The Government will consult with interested parties on the design of the new reward grant in the autumn.
Mr Morley explained: “The new Waste Performance Reward Grant will be introduced in 2005-06 and will build on the good work already established through the Waste Minimisation and Recycling Fund. The new grant will give authorities more flexibility on how to achieve the good practice currently emerging from local waste minimisation, recycling and composting projects.”
