Two workers on Amey’s City of London waste collection and street cleansing contract have been awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours lists 2016.

Sean McCarthy and Charlie Andrews were given the accolade for their voluntary service to the British Legion Poppy Appeal. Together, the pair have raised over £300,000 for the cause.

Mr McCarthy, who has worked in the City for 21 years and lives in Dartford, said: “We are both really honoured to have been nominated. It’s made us want to raise even more money, so we’ll be back in 2016 doing our bit ahead of Remembrance Sunday.”

Mr Andrews, who lives in Becontree, added: “We’re pleased we’ve been able to help the Poppy Appeal and it’s nice to get this recognition – we certainly didn’t expect it!”

Poppies

According to Mr McCarthy, he first became involved in poppy sales around 15 years ago, when he realised there didn’t seem to be any poppy sellers around the City of London. He contacted the Royal British Legion and they provided him with a basic starter kit – plain poppies and collection tin. He has since sold poppies in the City and at Millwall Football Club, but also organised specially-designed poppy badges on request.

Mr Andrews began helping with the sales four years ago, and together they’ve raised more than £300,000 for the Royal British Legion.

Also a recipient of a New Year’s Honour was Nina Skorupska, chief executive of the Renewable Energy Association (REA) which has the Organics Recycling Group as part of its remit. Mrs Skorupska received the accolade Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to renewables and equality in the energy industry, through her work as non-executive director of the WISE campaign.

Further REA involvement in the Honour’s list saw Philip Wolfe, a former director general of the REA, recognised with an MBE for his contribution to the renewables sector.
