David Hulse joins Liverpool-based metals recycler

David Hulse, the former director general of the British Metals Recycling Association, has joined Liverpool-based metal recyclers S Norton & Co.

Mr Hulse, who held his position at the BMRA from April 2001 until the end of 2002, is to become public affairs advisor for Norton's, one of the largest metal recyclers in the country.

With strong links to industry and government, Mr Hulse draws also experience from working for the Ford Motor Company and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. He has already played a key role in the discussions into the UK's implementation of the European End-of-Life Vehicles Directive and the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.

Commenting on the appointment, company chairman John Norton said: “Mr Hulse’s extensive experience in ELVs and his knowledge of the WEEE Directive will play an important part in his activities, which will include attending meetings on our behalf to maintain a current interest in these issues.

Mr Norton added: “He will also be using his background in Public and Government Affairs to help raise the profile of the Company and ensure that the needs and concerns of the independent recycling sector are recognised and addressed.”

Investment
Norton's have recently made a 20 million investment in new shredding equipment for their Liverpool plant, and the company is now building up to a launch date in the next few weeks. The new equipment is designed to raise standards and boost the company's handling of both ELVs and WEEE as tighter controls are imposed on the industry.

Mr Hulse will also be using his knowledge to assist in dealing with new hazardous waste regulations and controls stemming from the Landfill Directive.

Speaking of his new role, Mr Hulse said: “I am delighted to be able to apply my skills in an area which is very important to me. The recycling of metals – and other materials – in the future is key to the sustainability of waste management.”
