The project has been selected by the Port of London Authority as the preferred development for “reactivating” the Plaistow Wharf in the borough of Newham, Cory said.
The wharf, which originally served the Tate & Lyle sugar company, is one of a number of Thames wharves set to be revived for new uses under action led by London Mayor Ken Livingstone.
Cory said its proposed MRF would be built on 3.3 acres of land and would create 30 jobs.
Waste materials would be transported there for sorting by river transport from the transfer stations at Walbrook Wharf in the City of London and Smuggler's Wharf in the borough of Wandsworth. Other material would come from Cory's riverside facilities at Cringle dock and Northumberland Wharf.
Beneficiary
The main beneficiary of the new plant would be the Corporation of London, Cory said, which has a waste disposal contract with the company until 2015. The Corporation of London has no sites suitable for waste recycling, the company said.
David Riddle, Cory's chief executive, said the development would be important for continuing the use of the River Thames in transporting waste and keeping it away from London's congested roads.
He said: “Cory is well placed to transport waste to the proposed Plaistow Wharf MRF on the Thames. If planning permission is granted, the new MRF would add to Cory's portfolio of river-served facilities while strengthening the company's position as the largest commercial lighterage operator on the upper reaches of the Thames.”
The project now requires planning permission from the London Borough of Newham.
