Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling awarded the community group with a Quality Award plaque for collections of aluminium drinks cans and foil.
Alcan business development manager Terry Marks said: “Kent Community Recycling is an excellent example of how recycling can form the basis of a sustainable and profitable enterprise.
“Not only is this business providing a valuable service to the local community, it is sharing its success with local people by offering valuable employment opportunities and support for good causes.”
Collections
The Hawkinge-based community group has been collecting from local schools, pubs, clubs and small businesses for free for 14 years. It sorts aluminium from steel at its multi-material resource recovery plant.
The group is supported by recycling credits from Kent county council, and generates more than 25,000 per year from selling materials to recyclers. This is distributed to local good causes including schools, youth groups, churches and community groups.
A spokesperson for Kent Community Recycling said the group collected about three tonnes of aluminium and five tonnes steel every week.
Alcan said: “This award recognises the consistent volumes and high quality of the materials supplied by the group.”
