Cleanaway carve-up begins with sale of Scottish arm

It has now emerged that the Scottish arm of the waste management company has been sold to Shanks, although bosses are keeping tight-lipped about exact details of the sale.

The sale of Cleanaway UK was announced by Brambles late last month and came as no surprise to many members of the waste industry, shortly after the decision was announced to sell Cleanaway Germany.

Across the UK, Cleanaway employs about 9,000 people and has undergone a number of high-level management changes in recent years.

The company's work includes hazardous waste treatment, recycling and waste disposal and includes a sizeable landscape division along with a municipal waste business that has a share of the collections market thought to be in the order of 23%.

Sites
The two companies are not revealing the extent of the assets acquired by Shanks in Scotland, but they are thought to include two commercial sites, in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Cleanaway's spokesman said: “I can confirm that Shanks has brought Cleanaway Scotland. We have no further comment to make at this time.”

For Shanks, the deal represents a strengthening of its presence north of the border, where the company already has a major Private Finance Initiative contract underway with Dumfries & Galloway council as well as disposal contracts with Aberdeenshire and Argyll and Bute.

A spokesman for Shanks told letsrecycle.com: “We are pleased with the transaction but are not able to make any comments under terms in the agreement.”

Brambles is intending to re-focus its energies on its pallet and document management businesses Chep and Recall.
