CES refuses trade waste at landfill site nearing capacity

County Environmental Services (CES) has been forced to refuse trade waste at its United Mines landfill site.

CES is Cornwall county council's Local Authority Waste Disposal Company which manages two landfill sites in the county – United Mines in the west and Connon Bridge, near Liskeard in the east.

CES plans to extend the United Mines site but has faced a series of delays that have still not been resolved. The plans were initially delayed by local opposition to the planning application, but planning permission was eventually granted in November 2001.

A public inquiry into the proposed diversion of a footpath delayed the plans further and now more consultations are being conducted by the Environment Agency into the company's application for a Pollution Prevention Control Permit for the new site which was submitted in November 2002.

Due to the extensive setbacks, the United Mines site is due to run out of landfill capacity some time in 2004.

A statement from CES said: “CES Ltd confirms that the time scale for necessary permissions on the extension to United Mines is becoming critical and they are facing a real risk that the site will be unable to take waste from west Cornwall prior to the completion of the extension.”

The company will now only take household waste from its contract with the council at the United Mines site. Companies wishing to deposit trade waste must take it to the Connon Bridge landfill site or CES's transfer station in Pool.

The statement said: “CES has therefore taken the decision to conserve the remaining space at the site for the household waste that they are contractually obliged to accept from local authorities while they await final approval for the extension.”
