The facility will sort pre and post-consumer mixed plastic waste streams from the retail and construction sectors which will then be used to produce materials which can enter the extrusion and manufacturing lines.

Centriforce produces a range of products using recycled plastic material including walkways manufactured from post-consumer recycled HDPE, advertising hoardings and fence posts. It hopes that its investment in the facility to sort mixed plastics will help guarantee a high quality of HD, LDPE and PP plastic waste needed for production of high quality recycled goods.

A total of 1 million has been invested in the plastics sorting facility, and it comes in the wake of a further 1 million investment by Centriforce in May 2011 to double its production capacity to over 10,000 tonnes per year (see letsrecycle.com story).

Sorting

Centriforce managing director Simon Carroll said: Centriforce has taken the bold decision to develop an in house capability for sorting mixed plastic waste feedstock. We are still only one of a few UK recyclers to take this course, but we believe it is important to invest in a long-term solution.

The UK recycled plastics industry can play a key part in generating demand for mixed plastic waste streams from both municipal and industrial sources, thus contributing to UK landfill reduction targets.

To do this we need to develop an infrastructure capable of delivering a reliable supply of high quality feedstock. We decided that the only way to guarantee the high-performance products our customers expect was to invest in our own facilities.

Opening the recycling facilities, Louise Elllman, MP for Liverpool Riverside, said: Im delighted to be able to come and open this plastics recycling plant. As a private investor, Centriforce is putting its faith in the UKs growing recycling industry and is making a valuable contribution towards a more robust infrastructure for UK plastics recycling in future. Centriforces continued investment will stop thousands of tonnes of waste from going to landfill every year and help to create green jobs for UK plc.

Centriforce offers a number of its customers a closed loop recycling service whereby businesses which send their plastic waste to the company for recycling can buy back products that can be used in their business operations.
