Fridges had been stockpiled, pending removal of potentially-polluting CFC gases, at the unlicensed sites in Wharf Street, Chadderton, and Sudell Street, Manchester. The Agency served enforcement notices in September, giving Britannia deadlines to make progress with licence applications or remove the fridges.
Neither site has local authority planning permission, and so cannot be covered by a waste management licence from the Environment Agency. Removal of the fridges, by Britannia, is expected to be completed within a week.
However, the Agency is also consulting statutory consultees, including local authorities and the Health and Safety Executive, on draft waste management licences for three other sites run by Britannia – at Ledbury Road and Woodhall Street in Failsworth and at Gould Street in Oldham. The licences would allow the company to continue to store waste fridges at these locations until they can be treated to remove CFCs.
A spokesman for the Agency said that progress has also been made by Britannia in its applications for waste management licences for a further 12 sites in Greater Manchester. These are for sites at the following locations – Banbury Road, Failsworth; Twining Road and Millington Road, Trafford; Bell Street and Willow Street, Oldham; Stock Lane, Chadderton; Railway Approach, Rochdale; Varley Street, Miles Platting; Rugby Road, Rochdale; Riverpark Road, Manchester; Tenax Road, Trafford Park; and Railway Arches, Salford.
