The company made the decision following a comprehensive review of the Group, which determined that the waste and recycling side of the business would have more potential if run by a “blue chip company working on a national and international scale”.

Operating mainly in Kent and Essex, Brett Waste employs 130 staff and has a turnover of about 20 million a year. The firm has assets including two landfills at Shelford, near Canterbury, and Elsenham in Essex.
The company also has recycling facilities at Shelford, transfer stations at Folkestone and Dover – operated for Kent county council – and a materials recycling facility and transfer station at Hersden, near Canterbury.

Invest
Bill Brett, deputy chairman at Brett, said: “The marketplace for waste management is changing dramatically, driven in particular by new legislation. In our view, the long term future lies with one of the larger operators that have highly specialised skills and a desire to invest heavily for the future.
“Brett Waste Management has a strong reputation built on high operating standards, excellent assets and first class people,” he added.
The company has accepted there will be an “inevitable” amount of uncertainty for their employees with a sale on the cards, but Mr Brett said staff had been told that the company was attempting to minimise the impact by ensuring a swift and transparent process.
Certification
Brett Waste recently achieved certification for all its operating sites to internationally recognised standards in three different fields. The company received the BS 14001 standard for environmental management, BS 9001 for quality and OHSAS 18001 occupational health and safety.
Alastair Finlayson, managing director of the company, said: “It is a tremendous achievement. It demonstrates very clearly to all our stakeholders that we are committed to excellence in all that we do.”
