The BIR has traditionally represented metals, paper and textiles recyclers from around the world and holds conventions twice a year.
Communications director Elisabeth Christ said: “Five weeks before the beginning of the BIR Autumn Convention in Dublin from 25-26 October, current registration figures of over 300 confirmed delegates are extremely satisfactory. BIR can now expect an attendance of 500 delegates in total, which exceeds the most optimistic forecasts.”
She commented: “Although the dramatic events in the United States have shaken the world and have led to a decline particularly in air travel, the business world has decided that this despicable terrorist act should not lead to fearful seclusion but that life must go on. Many BIR members expressed their sadness and their concern but also their determination to continue to build strong business links across the world.”
BIR takes the view that in the current economic and political situation it is event more important that business people tighten their networks and form strong partnerships that will ensure the continuation of their businesses.
But, it is thought that the organisation does recognise that numbers at the convention could fall because of a reluctance to travel by air and also that world events until October 25 remain volatile.
One of the highlights of the Autumn Convention will be a welcome reception in Dublin Castle on the first day of the Convention sponsored by Ireland's Ministry of the Environment.
