Berryman wins three-year Devon glass contract

Glass recycler Berryman has won a three-year contract to recycle glass in Devon, which should increase the amount of glass recycled and help councils to hit their recycling targets.

The Devon Authorities Waste Reduction and Recycling Committee, which consists of the district councils in Devon, the two unitary councils, and the county council, said that Berryman was chosen for its “experience and innovation in managing and promoting the recycling of glass, as well as the provision of a highly competitive tender”. It is thought that Berryman will be paying above typical current market rates for material secured under the contract.

Berryman will work with the councils to promote closed loop recycling and secure local markets for glass.

The colour separated glass will be collected through the county's network of 286 large banks, 16 midi types, 170 1100 litre wheeled/modular bins and 88 pavilions by the council's hauliers and delivered to Berryman. It will then be processed at Europe’s most modern cullet treatment plant operated by Berryman sister company, Reuse UK at Knottingley near Doncaster and supplied to Rockware Glass.

Councillor Ann Liverton, chairman of Devon Authorities Waste Reduction and Recycling Committee said: “Berryman will actively help us to reach government recycling targets. We will be working together to secure local long term sustainable high value markets for glass. We also intend to place high priority to promoting a closed loop recycling through long term research and development.”

She added: “We are particularly keen to work with Berryman to create a more positive public attitude towards glass recycling as a resource and not only a waste material through educational and public information programmes.”

Mick Keogh, managing director of Berryman, said: “We look forward to working closely with Devon to increase as well as add value to the glass recycling activity, as well as encouraging residents to recycle more through educational and community initiatives.”

Berryman plans to work with the councils to increase the amount of glass collected by developing its education programme. This will involve the glass forever! Key Stage 2 educational programme which has been developed by Rockware Glass and is being adopted in schools throughout the county.

Berryman already bulk purchases the glass from Cornwall which is collected via a number of contractors including Cornwall cullet and some direct council services.
