Berryman joins forces with Onyx to increase glass recycling in Sheffield

Onyx has signed a deal with glass recycling company Berryman to improve Sheffield's glass recycling facilities and to encourage residents to recycle more of their waste.

Onyx was awarded a 30-year integrated waste management contract in August 2001 by Sheffield City Council and the company has now signed a contract with Berryman for the collection of glass in the city. The new contract is one of the first steps Onyx has taken to enhance the city's glass recycling service and increase recycling.

Berryman will expand the glass recycling network by installing new banks over the next few months. The banks will help Sheffield triple its recycling rate in the next three years and enable it to hit government targets. Currently the city produces 240,000 tonnes of domestic waste a year and recycles just 5%. By 2005/6 Sheffield needs to recycle 18%.

Judith Turner, director of operations for collection and recycling at Onyx Sheffield, said: “Berryman will actively help Sheffield to meet government recycling targets. We are keen to work with Berryman to create a more positive public attitude towards glass recycling as a resource and not only a waste material through educational and public information programmes. Residents of Sheffield will soon be ask to “give us your glass” when they arrive at supermarkets of when they use leisure and community centres or their local parks.”

Berryman will work with Onyx on educational and awareness-raising programmes to encourage waste education and participation in recycling schemes.

Mick Keogh, managing director of Berryman, said: “We look forward to working closely with Onyx to add value to the glass recycling activity, as well as encouraging residents to recycle more through imaginative local initiatives.”

The tonnage collected by Berryman will be processed in West Yorkshire by Berryman sister company, Reuse UK and will be supplied to Rockware Glass for reprocessing.
