ASW sale raises hopes of steelmaking starting again in Cardiff

Spanish steel maker, Celsa, has purchased the majority of ASW’s assets in Cardiff and certain of its assets in Sheerness. The purchase should mean an important sales option for UK scrap becomes available again

The deal was announced yesterday and has won support from National Assembly for Wales. Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies said: “I am delighted that the purchase of the assets of ASW in Cardiff has now been completed by Celsa, the major Spanish steel-maker. The Welsh Assembly Government has taken a keen interest in the sale and welcomes this significant development and is in regular contact with senior executives of the Company.

Mr Davies added: “I know that the first priority for Celsa over the next few months is finalising a detailed business plan for the Cardiff operation. It is not yet clear what that plan will recommend but top management at Celsa have emphasised that they have the best interests of Cardiff in mind.”

First Minister, Rhodri Morgan said: “I am optimistic that if market conditions are right, we will see steel-making beginning again in Cardiff during 2003 creating good new jobs for the skilled and committed workforce in South Wales.”
