Arsenal go-ahead sees new recycling centre in North London

London Waste has been given the go-ahead for a state-of-the-art waste and recycling centre in North London as a result of the Arsenal stadium redevelopment.

Islington Council has given its approval for the new recycling centre in Lough Road because it has awarded planning permission to Arsenal to build a 60,000 seater stadium on an existing waste transfer facility owned by LondonWaste at Ashburton Grove. LondonWaste is part-owned by SITA and the North London Waste Authority.

The new facility will include a community recycling centre, bulking bays for recyclates, an education centre and a waste transfer facility. Construction is expected to start by mid 2002, with relocation to the new site expected in early 2003. The three level recycling facility will promote recycling as the first option before other disposal methods are explored. Lough Road is also next to a major railway line which offers the potential to transport waste by rail.

Steve Oulds, LondonWaste’s commercial manager, said: “We’ve worked hard to put together a facility which will have star quality. Although most of the attention will be on the new stadium this is good news for Islington and another step in the right direction for London. We believe the new multi-functional waste treatment centre will be to waste management excellence what Thierry Henry is to football.”

Although permission has been given to build a 60,000 seat stadium at Ashburton Grove, the final decision now lies with the mayor, Ken Livingstone. Assuming the application gets the mayor's support, construction for the new stadium is expected to start by mid 2002.
